This is an original 1876 black and white wood engraving of actress Madame Vestris in the character of Irène, from Voltaire's play of the same name. When Voltaire completed his play he nervously returned to Paris and found actors for play. Because of his influence in both the American and French Revolutions, he had been hesitant to return, however he was greeted by throngs of people all eager the now-elderly mover and shaker. The evening that he saw Irène performed, he was crowned with a laurel wreath by an actor, and at the finale of the play his bust was brought out and each actor proceeded to also crown it with laurels. This image depicts the moment just before "Irène" herself adorns the bust with a wreath.
