This is an original 1882 black and white in-text wood engraving of the ill-fated Gervaise Macquart and her husband Coupeau from French author Emile Zola's L'Assommoir. Once a teetotal, Coupeau succumbs to a work-related back injury and soon discovers the joys of liquor. Here, the couple relaxes in a tavern designed to supply the lower classes with cheap liquor, the Assommoir.
