1888 Chromolithograph Costume Little Russia Ukraine Ethnic Native Cheremis LCH5

This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts some of the popular clothing styles from various regions in Little Russia, Russia, Old Great Bulgaria (part of modern day Ukraine) and the Mari (Cheremis) people. For the majority of these cultures, it was mandatory for married women to cover their hair in public, and that, coupled with the often harsh weather, promoted the use of elaborate designs and distinctive dress.

Top (Left to right) - Shepherd from Kherson, Ukraine, wearing a touloupe, or sheepskin jacket, and chiravaris (wide pants) - Two men from Kherson wearing kalpak hats, bechmet vests and caftans over wide pants which have been tucked into heavy duty boots - Woman from Kherson in a kokolshhik headdress and a sheepskin pelisse, which would have been a wedding present - Woman from Kherson wearing plain clothing decorated with embroidery and decorative jewelry - Woman from Kherson wearing a kokoshnik and summer attire, barefooted.

Bottom (Left to right) - Mari women from Simbirsk (Ulyanovsk) in ceremonial attire - Women from Nizhny Novgorod wearing embroidered dress with fur-lined jackets. One of them is not wearing the traditional small cape or mantle, displaying the puffed shoulders of her shirt - Peasant from Oryol in a tschepatz with gold embroidery garnished with pearls, in a traditional Slavic hat.
