This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which features the fascinating clothing worn by the Breton peoples of Great Britain during the Roman occupation and druidic eras.

Key Elements in Each Panel

Top (Left to right) - Breton man, wearing a gaunacum, similar to Roman fashion - Belgian man, a Breton immigrant - Man from the Tin Islands, or Cassiterides, wearing a Greek cassiteros - Two judges, druids of the law who settled disputes within communities - Two priestesses of Cybele from the Roman period, one bare-chested.

Bottom (Left to right) - Military costume from the west of the Baltic sea, which was brought to Britain by early Danish and Norwegian explorers. The Danish and Saxon influence remained strong with the Highlanders with many years during the Middle Ages - Irish man and woman, wearing winter clock. Interestingly, Ireland escaped the conquest of Rome - Mounted Breton - Romanized Breton - Caledonian (Scot, or Pict), with distinct tattoos that would have been begun while still in childhood.
