This is an original 1915 halftone print of what is believed to be the Lausanne Cathedral, also referred to as the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The construction of this ancient church began around 1170, though it was never completed. It was designed in the gothic architectural style. Historically, the structure served as a watchtower, guarding the city against fires and other dangers. Unfortunately, in 1536, the Reformation and Bernese armies looted the cathedral, stripping it of its artifacts, decorations, artworks, statues, altars and more. During the 19th century, architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc began the cathedral's restoration process.

A native of Plymouth, England, Samuel Prout primarily specialized in European architectural and cityscape subject material, and favored watercolor as his medium. His works have been engraved for the Beauties of England and Wales, The Antiquarian and Topographical Cabinet and for the Illustrations of the Rhine, drawn from Nature and on Stone by S. Prout. In 1829, Prout was appointed "Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to His Majesty." He had also been given a similar honors by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Prout was also affiliated with the Associated Artists (or Painters) in Water Colours and was elected the Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1830. His works have been exhibited at the Bond Street Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Old Water Colour Society and more.
