This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two members of the Hylocharis Xantusii family, commonly known as Xantus Hummingbird. With an average length of 75-87 mm., the forehead, face, and chin are velvety black, the throat and breast brilliant emerald green, with a cinnamon belly and dark chestnut tail. The species is limited to the southern part of Baja California and is common in the region of Cape San Lucas, at the southern extremity of the peninsula. The orchid shown is Epidendrum oncidioides, more commonly known as the Oncidium-Like Encyclia, which grows in Veracruz and many other regions of Mexico's "tierra caliente" or "hot country". It flowers from February to April.
