This is an original 1897 black and white halftone print of "The Face of the Rock at Abu Simbel. Drawn by Faucher-Gudin, from a photograph by Beato." The structure was one of six rock temples erected in Nubia during the reign of Ramesses II and was known as the "Temple of Ramesses, beloved by Amun." This late nineteenth century image depicts the two massive rock temples, also known as the Abu Simbel temples, or the "Nubian Monuments," in their original location. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Abu Simbel temples are located in Nubia, on the western bank of Lake Nasser in southern Egypt. In 1968 the complex was relocated, in its entirety, to an artificial hill situated above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.
