This is an original 1927 sepia halftone print of the enormous deity Kwan Yin, goddess of Mercy. This statue was carved from a sandstone cliff, sealed with plaster and painted and guilded. The sculpture rests in the temple of Tafotse near Pinchow, Shensi, China. The figure to the left of Kwan Yin is a giant statue of Buddha. Note the men at the base of the statue, which gives an idea of how truly colossal she really is. Photography courtesy of E. L. Estabrook.
