This is an original 1873 black and white in-text wood engraving of a portrait of English Assyriologist and archaeologist George Smith (1840-1876) during the Victorian era. Smith is known for being the first to discover and translate the ancient Mesopotamian poem, the "Epic of Gilgamesh", that is considered to be the world's first work of literature.
