1876 Stone Lithograph Khosrau I Chosroes Anushirvan Anushirwan Philosopher XHA5

This is an original 1876 black and white stone lithograph of Khosrau I, alternately known as Chosroës I or Anushirvan (Anushirwan) the Just. This rock relief illustrates how revered he was by the people and reviled by the ruling classes. Considered to be the closest the Sassanian Empire had to a philosopher king, his rule was long and influential, but ultimately his influence decimated in a short period of time after his death.

Thought to be one of the greatest Sassanid Emperors, he was known as a Shahanshah, or Great King. He affected reform in all facets of the Persian influence. Most notably, for a short period of time, he returned the power base to Shah; a move that would ultimately be overturned by his immediate predecessor Hormizd IV due to anger from local officials and noble families.

Notice how each section of this print represents a different class of people from the Roman and Sassanian Empires and illustrates their varied opinions on the Shahanshah, whether they bring gifts and exaltations or swords and anger.
