This is an original 1874 black and white double-page in-text wood engraving of illustrations by Joseph Nash (1809-1878) that portrays the voyage of French engineer and balloonist, Claude Jules Duruof (1841-1899) and his wife, from their take- off from Calais, France, Europe to their rescue in the North Sea by Capt. William Oaxley and mate James Buscome of the Grand Charge. His pioneering flights marked the birth of airmail during the Victorian era.
