This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two members of the Lampornis Clemenciae family, more commonly known as the Blue-throated Hummingbird. With an average length of 125-130 mm., the male bird has a celestial blue or violet throat with a metallic sheen, while the female's throat is gray. The tail is black, with its lateral feathers white tipped. There is a narrow white band behind the eye. The species is found from the south of the United States, through Mexico's mountainous regions, to the state of Oaxaca, living at altitudes of 5500 feet and above. The plant shown is Maxillaria elatior, more commonly known as The Sturdy Maxillaria, is found in the cooler parts of Veracruz, and flowers in July and August.
