"Selasphorus Platycercus"
This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of several members of the Selasphorus platycercus, commonly known as the Broad-tailed Hummingbird. With an average length of 94 mm., the throat is metallic reddish-purple, with extended lateral feathers - the tail is purplish black. This hummingbird has a wide distribution, from western United States to northwest Guatemala, and is present virtually all over Mexico, except Baja California. It prefers high altitudes, having been found nesting at 11,000 feet on Mount Popocatepetl. The pictured orchid, Odontoglossum maculatum, is more commonly known as The Spotted Rhynchostele, flowers in February and March, and grows in the forests near Orizaba and Cordoba, in Veracruzm but is more often seen in the states of Mexico, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Oaxaca.
