"Campylopterus Hemileucurus Hemileucurus"

This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of a two members of the Campylopterus Hemileucurus Hemileucurus Hemileucurus family, more commonly known as the De Lattre Saberwing Hummingbird. With an average length of 131 mm., this is one of the largest Mexican hummingbirds. The crown is black, and there is a short white stripe behind the eye. The lower parts and upper back are metallic violet-blue; and the rest of the dorsal region and middle tail feathers are blueish green. The tail is broad, almost entirely purple-black, except the outside feathers on either side, the end halves of which are white, justifying the specific name "hemileucurus", meaning "half-white tail." It lives in humit forests of the south of Mexico, from Veracruz and Guerrero to Tabasco and Chiapas. It does not frequent the upper parts of the tall forest trees, but flies close to the ground at the edge of clearings or along the sides of roads and trails. It is a shy solitary bird, never seen in company with other hummingbirds, but invariably alone. The orchid is Epidendrum vitellinum, commonly known as known as the Yolk-Yellow Prosthechea. It grows in profusion on the astern slopes of the Cofre de Perote mountain as well as around Cordoba and Orizaba, Veracruz. It is a common species found in any parts of that state, as well as in Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.
