This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two Abeille Hummingbirds, species Abeillia Abeillei, more commonly known as the Emerald Chinned Hummingbird. At an average length of 106 mm., the throat of this bird is resplendent green and the breast, velvety black. Its tail feathers are bluish-black until near the tips, which are gray. The beak is notably short, and black. Preferring to live in damp, high tropical and subtropical zones, they are found in Central America, and as far north as Nicaragua. It can be seen in very damp virgin or unfrequented forests, generally among the low vegetation in search of insects inside flowers, but as its beak is so short, it has a difficult time retreiving food from deeper blooms. The pictured orchid is known as Oncidium tigrinum unguiculatum, and flowers in January and February.
