1963 Color Print Hermit Mockingbird Heart Shaped Rhynchostele Mexico Animal HMX1

"Phaethornis Superciliosus"

This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of two members of the Phaethornis Superciliosus family, commonly known as the Hermit Hummingbird. With an average length of 160-162 mm., the bird is recognizable by its long curved beak and by the central tail feathers, which are much longer than the others. All the tail feathers are white at their extremities, but the central two are white for about half their length. The face is streaked by two parallel bands, buff or whitish, one above te eye and the other on the cheek. The under parts are pale brown, merging into buff, with the throat much lighter and bordered laterally by dark bands. The Hermit lives in southern Mexico. Its geographical distribution continues southwards to Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia. In Mexico it is usually found at more or less low altitudes. The orchid, Odontoglossum cordatum, more commonly known as the Heart-Shaped Rhynchostele, is native of the region of Cordoba and Orizaba, in the state of Veracruz, as well as the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. It flowers in January and February.
