1963 Color Print White Eared Hummingbird Booth's Nidema Mexico Wildlife HMX1

This is an original 1963 color print by Rafael Montes de Oca of several members of the Hylocharis Leucotis family, more commonly known as the White Eared Hummingbird. With an average length of 87 mm., the male has the front part of the head purplish violet, with a prominent horizontal white stripe behind the eye; the throat is a brilliant emerald green, and the rest of the under pats are bronzze-green, like the back. The beak is reddish with a black tip. In the female the violet-purple of the head is substituted by a buff tinge which darkens to brownish on the crown; the lower parts are whitish, the throat having small bronze-green spots. The species is numerous in the pine and oak fforests of the Sierra Madre, and ranges from Sonora in the west and Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi in the east as as far south as Nicaragua, Central America. It occasionally appears in southeast Arizona. The orchid illustrated is Epidendrum pallaceum, more commonly known as Booth's Nidema, found in Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo and Chiapas, and right through Central America to Venezual and the Guianas.
