1875 Woodcut Alphonse Neuville Death Turenne Marshal France Salzbach Dutch XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville, which depicts the death of Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, who caught some of the early fire at the Battle of Salzbach during the Dutch Wars. He had been promoted to Marshal General of France under the reign of Louis XIV, and was a prominent military figure during the French civil war known as the Fronde. Many were extremely grieved by the news of his passing, and his body was buried next to those of French kings at St. Denis. Even the French Revolutionists, known for unearthing many a dignified corpse, left his remains untouched during their revolt in the late 18th century.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
