This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which features two panels of William Hogarth's Marriage à-la-mode, a comical study of a forced marriage in 18th century between a wealthy middle class lady and a poor, but titled, gentleman. Ball preparations are being made in the upper panel, and a member of the law chats to the mistress of the house, who is getting her wig made up by a French hairdresser. A gentleman waiting for his curls to set is listening to a flute player and sipping on hot chocolate, a delicacy of the time. On the floor, a dark-skinned servant lays out some of his mistress' recent acquisitions from overseas. The lower panel depicts the aftermath, with the mistress of the house yawning irreverently as she prepares to go to bed after quite an exciting night. Her lord husband, who just returned home, looks exhausted. His sword lies broken on the floor, he's broke, and he really isn't in the mood to play into his wife's little mind games.
