This is an original 1894 black and white wood engraving of an exterior and frightening view of the dungeon at Fort William in Calcutta (Kolkatta), India during British rule popularly called "The Black Hole of Calcutta." It was a place that was only suited to house two to three prisoners with only two windows lined with iron bars that was often overcrowded but never so badly as when Nawab rebels overthrew British rule in the region and imprisoned all of the British soldiers and civilians they could fit into the "Black Hole" which was 146. In the morning 123 had died of suffocation, heat exhaustion and brutal crushing.
