This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) which accompanies the story of the fair Mary Ancel, a maiden from Alsace-Lorraine, France. The youth embracing her in the illustration was her cousin, they were extremely fond on one another. The man about to smack him is her father, Edward. Although their love was requited, they never married, as circumstance saw it fit to send them in different directions.
