This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) entitled "Mr. Pogson's Temptation," in which Mr. Pogson, an Irishman, meets a young woman visiting Paris and succeeds in getting her to slip him her calling card. Glancing at it, he discovers that she is, in fact, the Baroness de Florval-Delval. Suddenly, he realizes he may be a little bit out of his league.
