This is an original 1878 black and white wood engraving of the lions gate of the Elephanta Caves, located on Elephanta Island, Maharashtra, India. The area offers five Hindu caves, and two smaller Buddhist caves, all dating from between the late 5th century to the late 8th century AD. The caves were renovated in the 1970s after several years of neglec, and in 1987, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This 133+ year old Item is rated Very Fine ++. Light aging throughout. No creases. No natural defects. No surface rub. 1/2 inch tear - top. Light moisture wrinkling. Please note there are two 1/2" tears in the upper white margin of this image.
