James Montgomery Flagg

James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) is perhaps best known for his iconic World War I recruitment poster, which featured a very serious Uncle Sam and the caption "I want YOU for U.S. army." Due to the costs of hiring a model, he ended up using his own face (with added age and goatee) for Uncle Sam. Beginning his career at the age of 12 when his work was featured in magazines such as LIFE, Flagg used his passion for art and comedy to create countless cartoons and illustrations which appeared in books, newspapers and advertising all over America.
