This is an original 1910 color print of an illustration by Maria Louise Kirk (1860-1938) that portrays the legendary Onondaga or Mohawk Indian leader Hiawatha, (Ayenwatha, Aiionwatha, Haien'wa'tha),standing over the body of Mondamin, "the friend of man", after Hiawatha wrestled him to death according to the epic poem entitled "The Song of Hiawatha" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882).
