Howard Pyle

(1853-1911) Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware and had perhaps the greatest influence on American book illustration in the late 19th century. His dramatic, detailed, and colorful illustrations of subjects ranged from American history, to medieval lore, to children's fairy tales. In 1894, he began teaching classes at Philadelphia's Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Technology and a whole generation of illustrators such as N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Ethel Franklin Betts, Jessie Willcox Smith, Stanley Arthurs, Frank Schoonover, Sarah S. Stilwell Weber, Philip R. Goodwin, and Harvey Dunn studied under him. Pyle also established the Brandywine School of American Illustration.
