This is an original large-format 1861 black and white in-text wood engraving of a sketch of General Blenker's brigade covering the Union army retreat after the First Battle of Bull Run (also known as First Manassas) of the American Civil War. The 8th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the German Rifles, Colonel Stahel commanding, are shown repelling the last charge of the Confederate cavalry.
