This is an original 1851 two-color wood engraving which depicts the tight formation of the Napoleon Bonaparte's grenadiers of the Consular guard at the Battle of Marengo. It was fought near Alessandria, in Italy, and ended with a decisive French victory.

Imperial Guards were the elite soldiers at the forefront of warfare, reassuring troops with their familiar and colorful uniforms. Found in every military branch, they were often known to refuse promotions if it meant a regiment change, and without their constant support and protection, Napoleon would have found the expansion of French territory to be much more difficult. This fascinating collection was engraved by such artists as Irish engraver J.W. Orr, and explores some of the many facets of the Imperial Guards' lives and battles during the early 19th century, including Marengo, military life, their tragic march into Russia, and Napoleon's final farewell after his abdication in 1814.
