This is an original 1877 black and white wood engraving of the Battle of Malakoff on September 7, 1855 CE during the Crimean War between France and Russia. The engagement began with a day-long exchange of artillery fire. The next day on September 8, Bosquet's corps charged up the Malakoff redoubt and after a whole day of visceral, hand to hand combat, the French planted their flag at the summit. The French lost 10,000 soldiers and the Russians had suffered 13,000 casualties, a total of nineteen generals from both sides were also killed in action. The battle was significant in that it ended the Siege of Sevastopol and lead to the armistice signed in the Treaty of Paris on March 30, 1856.
