This is an original 1881 black and white wood engraving of a scene from the Battle of Malakoff (present day Ukraine) during the Crimean War, which had been fought between French and Russian forces in order to capture Sevastopol. The French won the battle under the direction of General MacMahon. This particular siege was one of the most famous of the 19th century.
