This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of William Yeames' famous problem picture, "And When Did You Last See Your Father?". Like most paintings of this genre, the scene depicted is paused at a vital moment which is left up to the viewer's puzzlement. Without understanding the backstory there are a hundred different reasons why the little boy might be standing in front of those somber people, while his sister cries behind him. However, in this case it is not because the boy is in trouble, but rather his father is. After the English Civil War, Cromwellians were eager to dispose of their foes, and had no qualms about interrogating their next-of-kin to locate them.
