This is an original 1871 black and white in-text wood engraving of a "Bier", a flat frame stand on which a casket or coffin containing a corpse is often place in the center of an altar. The Bier are used for the body of a young female or male of the middle or higher class with several ornaments, and at the head is an upright piece of wood called a "Sháhid", which is covered with a shawl. The bier of a boy is distinguished by a turban, generally made of a red Kashmir shawl.
