This is an original 1945 color print of Allied forces shooting at a Japanese airplane. The caption writes, "The stillness that follows is startlingly punctuated by guns 'unloading through the muzzle.' The smoking wreckage of the enemy floats astern." Kamikazes, or Japanese pilot suicide attacks, became very popular during the last stages of the war in the Pacific theatre. The attacks were made to inflict as much destruction as possible on Allied warships, so the aircrafts were stocked with explosives, torpedoes, fuel tanks and bombs.
