This is an original 1856 monochrome wood engraving of "Earthenware." The various items include an important Peruvian piece with strong historical associations and a depiction of how features and characteristics of prominent men were perpetuated (a). The object is a drinking-vessel of reddish clay standing nine inches tall. It belongs to a class of vessel, vase-busts, of which there are only two or three examples. It facial features are prominent, including a protruding upper tooth. The object was to take the place of actual skulls of conquered enemies; this one is specifically of Fuminhauy, or Rumminaui, whose unusual barbarity and cruelty were chronicled in the Commentaries of Garcilasso de la Vega. Also among the group is the stylized head of a jaguar and various other vessels, vases, and ornamental objects.
