1875 Steel Engraving William Henry Bartlett Cloth Hall Ypres 18th Century XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white steel engraving of an illustration by British artist William Henry Bartlett which was engraved by another famous British artist, Albert Henry Payne. It depicts the town hall (known as the Cloth Hall) of Ypres, Belgium, so named for its medieval cloth market. It suffered greatly from artillery fire during World War I, but has since been restored.

Bartlett, William Henry

William Henry Bartlett (1809-1852) was a skilled British artist who specialized in steel engravings. He was also an avid traveler who made frequent trips to the Middle East and the Americas. Unfortunately, his excessive exploration was a downfall, as he died of a fever whilst onboard a French ship off the Maltese coast.
