This is an original 1920 color print of the assassination of William I, Prince of Orange (1533-1584). He was also known as William the Silent and was the leader of the Dutch revolt against Spain that began the Eighty Years' War. He originally was a member of the court of the governor of the Spanish Netherlands, but grew unhappy with Spanish rule and turned against his former masters. In 1580, the Spanish king declared him an outlaw and William I was assassinated after many attempts by Balthasar Gerard in 1584.
