This is an original 1927 halftone print of "Implements of the Smoky Mountain Gunsmiths, Used for Making Bullets, Rifling Guns, etc."

These are traditional tools of Smoky Mountain gunsmiths.

The name "Smoky" refers to the natural fog most commonly hanging over the range in the morning and after rainfall, resembling plumes of smoke from a distance.

The Great Smoky Mountains are located along the Tennessee-North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. The mountain range is a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, forming a part of the Blue Ridge Physiographic Province. The Great Smokies are estimated to contain 187,000 acres of old growth forest, representing the largest stand east of the Mississippi River, and are protected by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which was established in 1934. In addition, the Great Smokies have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are part of the an International Biosphere Reserve dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of one of the most diverse ecosystems in North America, including the densest black bear population in the Eastern United States and the most diverse salamander population outside the tropics.
