1917 Print WWI German Cartoon Walter Trier Lustige Blatter Kerensky Offensive

This is an original 1917 black and white halftone print of a World War I political cartoon drawn by the Czech-Jewish artist, Walter Trier (1890-1951) for Lustige Blätter, a weekly German humor magazine. The cartoon satirizes Alexander Kerensky, the Russian Minister of War who ordered the last Russian offensive in World War I, during July 1917. The failed operation was known as the Kerensky Offensive or the July Offensive.

The use of editorial cartoons for propaganda purposes was widely popular during World War I. Almost every newspaper of note had their own staff cartoonist who created images (and unfortunately many stereotypes) to support the war effort at home and on the front lines.
