This is an original 1872 black and white wood engraving of a sketch by English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) entitled "The Cheap Defense of Nations--A National Guard on Duty." Thackeray was famous for his satirical perspective, and is generally considered to be second only to Charles Dickens in Victorian era English literature.
