This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts the brave Countess Joan of Montfort crying out "See, see!" to which some of the smart alecs nearby said "Yes, it is." The infatiguable countess had rallied a small army and was waiting on help from overseas in her quest to be of use to her captured husband, the Count of Montfort, who was being held in the Louvre. At this point the perpetrator of the whole mess, Charles of Blois, had besieged the small fortified town Joan was in, and had been getting more aggressive with each passing day. The sight of a huge fleet coming to rescue them was, needless to say, a moment definitely worth rejoicing about.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
