This is an original 1876 black and white wood engraving of an elegant woman who has just finished chatting with a beggar and is about to step into her sedan-chair. She is wearing a common hairstyle popular during Louis XIV's reign known as a "fontange." Characterized by its height, it involved piling hair up behind ones headdress and adorning it with ribbons, flowers and lace.
