This is an original 1882 black and white steel engraving that depicts Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. He married his son to the future queen of Spain, ensuring a Hasburg foothold and attempted to have his daughter marry the dauphin of France, however the dauphin later chose to marry Maximilian's second wife instead, once he forced her to annul her other marriage.
