1888 Chromolithograph Banjara Costume India Funeral Verna Caste Lambadi LCH2

This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which takes a look at some of the traditional costumes worn by members of the Banjara (Lambadi) caste, as well as a ceremonial funeral procession for a wealthy Hindu.

Key Elements in Each Panel

Top - Funeral procession. After death, the body gets washed, perfumed, and covered with flowers, with carmine applied to the face. Musicians lead the party, and the luxurious litter (jalledar), is one that is usually reserved for rajahs and lords.

Bottom (Left to right) - Grain merchant and his wife, Banjara caste - Beggar from the sect of Vishnu, wearing a colorful dhoti and holding a musical instrument, receiving a respectul salute from his wife - A salt merchant - Beggar from the sect of Vishnu - Kannadian pauper from the sect of Shiva, holding a pointed rod and a bell - Wife of the beggar in the red turban.
