1888 Chromolithograph Bordeaux Costume 19th Century Bordelais Dress Bonnet LCH5

This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts a variety of clothing and bonnet styles that could be found on the streets of Bordeaux, France, during the early 19th century. The pouffed caps were made from ozgandy, a sheer cotton plain-weave cloth which held its shape well, but was prone to wrinkling. Several of the young ladies here are known as grisettes, working girls who tended to wear simple gray dress which eventually led to their name (gray=gris). Although originally they were just impoverished lower-class workers, throughout the years the term grisette eventually became synonymous with part-time prostitutes and flirts.
