1890 Article Robinson Radial Car Truck Co Boston Streetcar West End Railway MAB1

This is an original 1890 two-page print article about the Robinson Radial Car Truck, invented by the Robinson Radial Car Truck Company, 95 Milk Street, Boston. The Robinson truck was most largely adapted to electric street cars, and its application was in the form of railway service. This article also features illustrations of the device, its principle of operation, and its application in practice. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an electric car truck, showing the two electric trucks at the ends, with a central radial truck. This illustration was reproduced from a photograph of a closed electric car of the West End Railway of Boston. Figs. 2 and 3, show the principle of operation of the radial truck. Fig. 2 represents a truck, or street car, of ordinary construction with rigidly-parallel axles, showing how it gets around a curve in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 illustrates the position which the axles and wheels assume with the radial truck in running over a curved track B. The axles automatically assume an exactly radial position on any curve upon which the car runs, and the power required to propel this car around curves is little, if any, more than that required to propel it on a straight line. Figs. 4 and 5 show a view of an open summer and closed car of the West End Electric Railway Company of Boston, supplied with the radial trucks.
