This is an original 1890 black and white wood engraving of Actaeon being devoured by Artemis' dogs, after she had thrown the skin of a deer over him to prevent the union of Actaeon and Semele. Actaeon is seen here trying to defend himself with a sword. This image was modeled after a scene from the metope of the temple at Senious.
