Packer's Tar Soap. Pine tar is the carbonization of pinewood through high temperature dry distillation, which produces a sticky substance. This material is used on baseball bat handles for superior grip, in roofing construction, as a wood sealant and preservative, as well as added to veterinary and agricultural products, such as horse hoof care and chicken beaks in order to prevent pecking inferior hens.
PackerÕs Pine Tar Soap exploited the substance and used it medicinally in their soap to aid in the treatment of such skin diseases as psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and more. PackerÕs Tar Soap originated in 1869, and was used as a common household toiletry in the bath, as a shampoo and in the nursery. The companyÕs famous slogan was ÒPure As The Pines.Ó
