George Frederick Watts (1817-1904)
George Frederic Watts was a popular English Victorian painter and sculptor who was associated with the Symbolist movement in the late 19th century. Raised by his father in an environment of a conservative interpretation of Christianity, and schooled in the classics, Watts became an artist apprehensive of conventional religion, but also one heavily influenced by allegory and the symbolic power of universal emotion and aspirations.
