This is an original 1899 black and white halftone print of the 729 Kyauksa Gu or "World's Largest Book" at the top of Mandalay Hill in Burma. Built in the early 1800's by King Mindon to honor the story of the Gautama Buddha, this field of stupas (referred to here as pagodas) each had gold inscribed tablets and a myriad rubies and precious stone decorating all the way up to Kuthodaw Pagoda. Unfortunately, after playing host to two theaters of major wars thanks to the strategic advantage the hill and the rows of stupas provided, almost none of the original splendors that adorned the Mandalay Hill remain, but instead has been the site of numerous restoration efforts.
