This is an original circa 1901 black and white wood engraving of a painting by Sir David Wilkie entitled "The Defence of Saragossa" or "The Maid of Saragossa" that portrayed the Spanish heroine, Capt. Agustina de Aragón (1786-1857), also known as the "Spanish Joan of Arc", firing a cannon at French soldiers at the First Siege of Zaragoza that was fought between June 15-August 14, 1808 during the Peninsular War that was part of the Napoleonic Wars and the Spanish War of Independence.
